What happens during my first session?
At your first appointment, Dr Kai will briefly explain the terms and conditions and the way we work. The aim is that all clients feel fully informed about the practical side of coming for therapy, and we provide you with a clear and concise guide to what's involved.
How do CBT and ACT work?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based talking therapy that can help you manage your problems by changing the way you think and behave. CBT has been shown to be an effective way of treating a number of different mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety.
CBT is based on the concept that your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are interconnected, and that negative thoughts and feelings can trap you in a negative cycle. CBT aims to help you deal with overwhelming problems in a more positive way by breaking them down into smaller parts. You're shown how to change these negative patterns to improve the way you feel.
Unlike some other talking treatments, CBT deals with your current problems, rather than focusing on issues from your past. It looks for practical ways to improve your thoughts, emotions and behaviour on a daily basis.
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based talking therapy that helps those experiencing a wide range of mental and physical conditions. ACT acknowledges that pain, loss, disappointment, ill health, rejection and anxiety are inevitable features of human life: The capacity to experience adversity. ACT aims to help you adapt to challenges by equipping you with developing greater psychological flexibility - instead of you continuing to engage in counterproductive attempts to eliminate or suppress unwanted experiences. We help you to pursue areas and directions in your life that are based on your core values, even when your natural instinct would be to escape or avoid hard and painful experiences, emotions, and thoughts. ACT is transdiagnostic and process-focused.
